It’s Official! ASWU Approves Ranked Choice Voting for Elections

The Associated Students of Whitworth University (ASWU), the official voice of the university’s student body, confirmed its decision to implement ranked choice voting for both the president and vice president executive positions. This decision came from ASWU’s Executive Team, which comprises the 2025-26 President, Vice President, Financial Director, and Communications Director.

According to Todd Sandberg, Assistant Dean of Student Programs, the university’s web development team will move forward with programming the technological features needed to make this shift to ranked choice voting. This will mean adding the appropriate election software to the online ballots.

Although it’s still unclear whether ranked choice voting will be implemented in time for April’s election, Sandberg says ASWU is hopeful. As the election season approaches, the Democracy Lab plans to work with ASWU in educating the student body about the importance of ranked choice voting. Further updates to come.
