With the revelation of the university’s land sale and use of racially restrictive covenants in the mid-20th-century, we are continuing this work to consider the residues of historical injustices that exist on our campus. Linked up with the multi-campus Locating Slavery’s Legacies project, Bert Emerson and Honors students are gathering artifacts from around campus that are linked, on the one hand, to slavery, the American Civil War, and the Confederacy; and on the other, memorials erected in opposition to the Lost Cause and white supremacy and in support of racial equality and universal Civil Rights.
